In my role as a coach dedicated to women’s leadership and empowerment, I’ve always believed in the profound capacity of music and poetry to touch our souls and catalyze significant personal growth. My practices, aimed at inspiring confidence, dismantling limiting beliefs, and encouraging bold steps toward an envisioned life, frequently underscore music’s unique power to echo our innermost feelings and aspirations.
“Our emotions, like songs, have the power to move us, to transform us. Embrace the music of your feelings; it’s the soundtrack of your authentic self coming to life.” – Unknown
In July 2023, I found myself in an incredibly inspiring setting at Sheryl Sandberg’s home for the launch of Lean In Girls. It was an environment pulsating with the energy of leaders, thinkers, and changemakers, all gathered for a cause close to my heart. The highlight was witnessing Rachel Platten perform “Girls” live—a performance that transcended mere entertainment. It was a heartfelt call to strength, resilience, and solidarity among women. Hearing Rachel’s voice, imbued with passion and purpose, I was moved to tears, a profound reminder that emotional responses are not just natural but necessary expressions of our humanity. They signify moments when we feel safe enough to be our most authentic selves, sharing our vulnerabilities and strengths alike.
Fast forward to February 2024 in Kansas City, a time marked by the juxtaposition of a Super Bowl victory’s high and the devastating low of a mass shooting. This period underscored the necessity of resilience, courage, and community as I navigated through emotional complexities with my clients and during my #IAmRemarkable workshops. In these sessions, amidst the collective emotional upheaval, I shared “Girls” once more. This time, the song’s message felt even more poignant against the backdrop of recent events. My own emotional response at Sheryl’s home, where I had felt so moved by Rachel’s performance, became a powerful teaching moment: it’s okay to be emotional. It’s a testament to our shared humanity, a sign that we are in a space safe enough to express our true selves.
In sharing this song and reflecting on my emotional journey, I aimed to underscore a crucial message: embracing our emotions—our tears, our strength, our vulnerabilities—is integral to the journey of empowerment. “Girls,” with its resonant lyrics and the context in which it was experienced, served not just as an anthem of hope and empowerment but as a reminder of the beauty in our emotional authenticity.
Now go take a listen to Rachel’s song “Girls.”
